Geography

Geography helps students to consider how our everyday choices can influence both the local and global environment. It is concerned with the study of people and their environment and looks at both Physical and Human Geography concepts. Students develop skills of empathy and critical analysis which helps develop a social conscience and creates responsible members of society.

Skills can be developed further at Junior Cycle level through Geoliteracy, identification of impactions, interconnections and interactions of different topics linked with the Junior Cycle Specification. Students will complete 2 CBA’s for their Junior Cycle. CBA 1 is based on Geography in the news and CBA2 is based on Geography in their local area. With this in mind students can create connections and discussions through out their study of Geography in their home life.

Geography is a subject that examines culturally diverse societies and encourages respect and tolerance. Griffeen Community College is a culturally diverse school with an international student body. Students from different cultural backgrounds are encouraged to relate their own experience through the Geography of their own country, which can be achieved through project work and events such as International Lunch. Language skills can be developed through classroom discussion and homework.

In Geography we encourage the active use of technology in learning and teaching. We hope to imbue in students a lifelong love of their natural and cultural environment.
